Tararuas - Southern Crossing

Kaitoke to Otaki in 2 days, 10-11 April 1999

The Tararuas as seen from Mt Victoria, Wellington on Sunday 18 April 1999

The Southern Crossing is a classic 32 km route across the Tararua mountain range just north of Wellington, New Zealand that many Wellingtonians and others from further afield undertake.
N.B. This crossing is an alpine crossing and should not be attempted by those without adequate experience. The section between Alpha Hut and Kime Hut is extremely exposed and subject to rapid weather changes. Always check weather forecasts and carry adequate equipment.
